Attention: Bright future ahead!
Many families in India do not have experience with formal education and dropout rates are high. Guatham dreamed about becoming successful. Chalice donors opened new doors and great opportunities for a boy who began to believe he may not achieve his life goals. Education is an important aspect of life. Growing up the twenty-year-old from India took pride in his studies.
The humble young man lives near our Assam site in India with his parents, brother, and sister. His father works as a daily labor despite his ill health. His mother is a domestic worker. Despite their hard work, they could not afford the education expenses for Gautam’s older siblings. His older brother didn’t graduate, and his sister completed her grade 12 but discontinued her studies.
Although Guatham received high grades in high school and was “academically brilliant,” his parents couldn’t afford to continue paying for school. He began to realize that his education journey could possibly come to an end. Guatham watched his older siblings discontinue their education because of his family’s low income. He knew he could be in the same boat.
Chalice’s sponsor sites are committed and dedicated to transforming the lives of children. Our Assam site director, Sr. Bindu, was aware of the financial barrier some children, like Guatham, had when it came to their education.
“We identify bright students from economically disadvantaged families who are unable to continue their higher studies,” Sr. Bindu says, “We aim to nurture these high-achieving children through HDP until they complete their higher education and can find suitable jobs.”
Understanding the situation of Guatham’s family and his siblings, Sr. Bindu knew that this learning crisis could lead to him dropping out of school permanently, putting his bright future at stake. He needed the resources to go to university. The site requested support for Gautham.
With the support of our generous Chalice donors, Guatham was given the opportunity to graduate and move on to pursue a secondary education. He decided to study for a Bachelor’s in Commerce. His goal is to become a bank accountant.
His college admission has helped him to continue his studies and motivated him to secure good marks and move toward his goal. Guatham could pay the fee for the two semesters and could purchase study materials. His cheerful smile never faded.
With this support, he is thrilled that he can fulfill his dream. He enjoys studying commerce and is eager to become a bank accountant! He is focused and preparing for his upcoming exams. Guatham is a great example of how children can thrive with extra support. He has broken the family’s pattern and remains grateful for this opportunity.
