HOW ABINAYA BECAME A NURSE IN INDIA

In Abinaya’s rural community near our Tamil site in India, the possibilities presented to her were slim.

In her village, the only acceptable profession for young women was teaching – a noble profession, but not necessarily what Abinaya wanted. For years, though, she never knew women could aspire to something else.

When she found a Chalice sponsor, everything changed.

But let’s rewind.

Abinaya’s father passed away when she was young, so she was raised solo by her mother. Agricultural daily wage work, her mother’s profession, didn’t pay very well. Food and healthcare, the necessities, were challenging to afford.

In their circumstances, they needed someone to intervene.

And God had just that person.

In 2014, Abinaya was blessed with a generous Chalice sponsor. She didn’t take the opportunity for granted, throwing herself into her studies. Her sponsor was there to support her, ensuring she could afford to attend school and pay for other Household expenses.

Having a sponsor motivated her to do well. In time, she realized she didn’t have to be a teacher – there were other options for young women. She learned about other career opportunities, and that was when she discovered her passion for nursing.

Today, Abinaya is a nurse in a hospital – proof anyone can accomplish their dreams when given the chance.
