Vijaya and Nagan's Dream Home

Vijaya and her husband, Nagan, worked hard to support their daughter through her education. Vijaya found domestic work in a neighboring village and Nagan, who is visually impaired, sells incense and candles. But earning the equivalent of $41 per month, Vijaya and Nagan struggled to provide for their daughter, Kalieswari, and to pay for her education. "Taking care of our family and child needs was very difficult," writes Vijaya.

They are very grateful to the Chalice sponsor who stepped in and eased some of that burden. Through Chalice's Madurai sponsor site in southern India, Kalieswari's generous sponsor helped her access education and nutritious foods through six years of her young life and is retired from the program.

But the family still faced an insurmountable problem: their house. "Our living place is made of thatches. It was difficult to stay inside while raining heavily," Vijaya describes. The cost of the repairs would be almost two years of Vijaya's earnings. "We could not repair the house and we were helpless," remembers Vijaya. "Safe housing was a dream for us until we approached Chalice."

When they spoke with the staff at the Madurai sponsor site, they came up with a plan. The site could contribute two-thirds of the cost of their home renovation, and Vijaya and Nagan could contribute the rest.

"The renovated house was handed over to us in September 2020," Vijaya reports merrily. "We are happy and grateful for the help given by Chalice. We pray for your generosity and compassion for our family. Thank you very much."
