Smiles of Joy Accompany Food Relief
In the midst of COVID-19 shutdowns in Kenya, three of our care homes (Grandsons of Abraham Rescue Centre, Bhakita Girls Rescue Centre, and Shanzu Orphanage), run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Mombasa, faced a sudden and severe food shortage.
Grandsons of Abraham Rescue Centre cares for boys rescued from the streets of Mombasa. During this time, they were caring for 220 boys and were doing everything in their power to find the resources to feed everyone. The Sisters' biggest worry was that, without adequate resources, the boys would start returning to the streets.
The strength and dedication of the Sisters is unparalleled. Their ability to make every dollar stretch and use community connections to keep everything running smoothly was a sight to behold. But a nationwide lockdown without an end in sight was daunting. As soon as the shutdown was announced, the Sisters quickly raised funds from their usual benefactors which helped them immensely for the first two months, but as the pantries emptied, their fears grew.
The Sisters reached out to our Mikinduri sponsor site who immediately applied for Chalice disaster funding which was approved under the COVID-19 fund (which had recently launched) and quickly funded by a very generous donor. The speed at which the need was fulfilled truly speaks to the dedication and hard work of our staff and supporters.
"It is with great pleasure that I convey our heartfult gratitude for the food support that you provided for our three care homes," enthused Sr. Jane, site director. "The children and staff of the care homes could not hide their joy upon receiving such significant donations. Their prayer is that God will bless you, our loving donors."
