International Day of Education

Children are infinitely curious. In their minds nothing is impossible; everything is amazing and possibilities are endless. One way to nurture this curiosity is by providing access to school so kids can learn, explore and reach their full potential.

In a video and written message on Sept. 12, Pope Francis launched a new initiative, called the Global Compact on Education, for the future of new generations. The pope has invited representatives from the world's religions, international organizations and humanitarian groups, as well as educators, economists, scientists, policymakers, people from the world of art, culture and sports, and young people themselves, to the Vatican May 14, 2020.

"Never before has there been such need to unite our efforts in a broad educational alliance, to form mature individuals capable of overcoming division and antagonism, and to restore the fabric of relationships for the sake of a more fraternal humanity," said Pope Francis. "We must have the courage to place the human person at the center."

This is the focus of our work here at Chalice and thanks to your support, every year thousands of children have the means to access education. The chance to go to school and learn is the best gift and the children who receive it are so grateful.

Last year the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as the International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Education is a recognized human right which unfortunately doesn't make it universally accessible. Hopefully one day all nations recognize that education is a human right and make it accessible for all, but until that happens we will continue to work together to ensure as many children as possible have the means to go to school. Thank you and God bless.
