Zambia’s Lunch Program: Nourish and Floruish

Keeping children nourished with wholesome food is top of mind for Chalice’s site directors. Sr. Agnes, Kawambwa site director, knows a balanced meal increases mental clarity and focus throughout the day.  Since these students are attending boarding school, our site must make sure they have the proper nutrition and meals while having a full learning day.

Since 1997, Chalice has partnered with the Sisters of the Child Jesus in northern Zambia. They run our sponsorship program in two of our boarding schools for children with visual impairments and/or albinism: St. Mary’s and St. Odilia’s. The students’ sponsors help with boarding, educational materials, and personal effects. Chalice also helps the teaching staff with learning tools for children with disabilities.

Some of our Zambia students have unique vision and/or skin health needs, the staff must take extra care with their diets. Children with albinism often have sores, so foods full of antioxidants and vitamins, like oranges, apples, bananas, and watermelons, are priorities.

Providing healthy and nutrient-rich meals to these students who are more at risk would be valuable.

The Kawambwa site partnered with Chalice to supply the schools’ meal programs. Thanks to your support, the Kawambwa nutrition program is in full swing. Chalice supports Kawambwa’s nutrition program by making sure they get the fruit they need.

Ladles & Love supports our sites to help children meet their nutritional needs. Our nutrition programs focus on each country and their needs. There are school lunch programs, community dining halls, and food hamper deliveries. Becoming a Lunch Buddy helps nourish our students and elders.

“Children who meet all their nutritional needs are able to learn effectively,” says Sr. Agnes. “When the brain, mind, and body are functioning well, there are no disruptions in the learning process.”

“They are able to eat meals consisting of protein-rich foods like eggs, sausage, chicken, and fish,” says Sr. Agnes. “Children are also very active and energetic due to the carbohydrate-rich-food they eat such as rice and nshma [pounded corn].”

The site staff can see the benefits in their skin, grades, and smiles.

“Thank you so much, Chalice and all the cooperating partners in ensuring that fatherless, motherless, and vulnerable children do not go to bed hungry.” Says Sr. Agnes.
